All the info in one place

The Korogocho Knowledge Hub platform: It was launched because there are hardly any well-founded, insightful or well-researched articles about this slum, at least not in one place. You can subscribe to the newsletter there. To mark the launch of the platform, the editors have made it freely accessible to everyone at no cost. Later, they want to try to afford even more research by charging a small subscription fee.

Facts, Futures, Research

This page provides comprehensive information about Korogocho in particular. It is the third largest slum in the Kenyan capital Nairobi.

An estimated 250,000 people live here in an area of just 1.5 square kilometres. The slum is an indictment. The people there live largely without running water, far too often without electricity, without washing machines or dishwashers, without a functioning sewage system – in an extreme and dangerous environment.

Health, hygiene, dump

The open rubbish tip in Dandora, known locally as ‘Boma’, emits acrid fumes and poisons the air. Almost everyone here suffers from respiratory diseases. Poor hygiene does the rest; people fall ill, become infected through no fault of their own, and medical care has been made possible mainly by a German NGO.

Added to this is a lack of education and training opportunities. The poorest of the poor families live here, unable to afford school fees for their children on the little they earn – if they have found work at all.

Information, publication, future

These are all keywords that do not adequately describe the reality. No, it is not enough to make you cry. Rather, it is enough to make you cry out for support.

What we are trying to do is to paint as complete a picture as possible of this reality by making scientific papers, books, treatises, videos and audio/podcasts available to those who are not indifferent to the misery of thousands of people somewhere far away from their homes – or simply want to be well informed in one place.

You are welcome.
