The health situation in the third largest slum of Kenya's capital Nairobi is very challenging due to overcrowding, poor housing, limited access to clean water and sanitation, and proximity to Nairobi's largest landfill, which affects air and environmental quality. Many residents depend on the landfill for their livelihood, scavenging for food and recyclable materials, exposing themselves to health risks from toxic gases and waste-related pollutants.

Malnutrition, HIV/AIDS, respiratory infections

Common health problems in Korogocho include respiratory infections, skin diseases, abdominal diseases, chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension, lung diseases, malaria, tuberculosis, malnutrition, and HIV/AIDS. Children under five face high rates of malnutrition and undernutrition, worsened by inadequate health care and poor living conditions. Pregnant women and young mothers often visit local clinics for checkups and treatment. Mental health issues are also significant but less documented.

Lack of basic medical care

Medical efforts in Korogocho include community health outreach programs and a newly established day clinic providing free basic medical care, treatment for chronic diseases, HIV medication, maternal and child health services, and health education. Despite these interventions, the lack of sustainable water treatment, sanitation facilities, and pollution control continues to put residents at risk. Public health recommendations emphasize improving water quality, respiratory disease prevention, and timely treatment of infections to reduce complications.

Summary

In summary, the health situation in Korogocho is marked by a high burden of communicable and chronic diseases exacerbated by environmental hazards and poverty. Ongoing medical outreach and community support are vital to address these challenges and improve the well-being of its residents.
